Before the construction of Kalinin Avenue, now Novy Arbat Avenue, houses and estates of the Moscow intelligentsia and nobles were located here.
Kompozitorskaya Street, which faces the main entrance to the Hotel building, was called Durnovsky Lane until the middle of the 20th century.
Here, right at the location of the Hotel, there used to be the Chizhov House, where at the end of the 19th century the world-famous
Russian artist-itinerant Vasily Polenov rented accommodation.
Inspired by the picturesque view from the window of his apartment, the Master painted one of his most famous paintings here -
Moscow courtyard, which has become one of the symbols of the Hotel.
Vasily Polenov described the history of the creation of the famous canvas as follows
“I went to look for an apartment. I saw the note, went to look, and right from the window I saw this view. I immediately sat down and wrote it. ”
Despite the modern buildings, the view of the church shown in the painting is open from the neighboring Arbat lane.
